Just a Babe in the Woods ~ Press release / Album review

What makes the world go around? Love? Money? Misery? Joy? Power? It's all here in the debut album from Just a Babe in the Woods. All good songs delivered with genre busting savvy. Unapologetic vocals, synced with a band showing a diversity from power house guitar riffs to spaced out dance-pop to rootsy grooves. Unafraid to mix it up and the gamble pays off. Recorded in Sydney Australia, Los Angeles and New York.
Just a Babe in the Woods is the dream child of Warren & Alex (CD) Slater. "We are Independent. The cover is a photograph of Alex at the age of 18. We liked it firstly because it's a beautiful shot, and secondly because it represents the sentiment of the album in general
i.e. a young girl out in the world, brand new and hoping for the best and ready to fight for it.
Hope you like her as much as we do."

From the opening cut, 'My Stupid Life' she sings her intent with wry humour. "My stupid life has always just begun." Kind of a jangle Pop track with barely a hint of the music to come.

Throughout the album, scenes from her life unfold. With a demand for respect and recognition, and with the enviable gift of a matter of fact bull@#*t detector, she wears her heart on her sleeve.
In 'Dreamtime' her life is clearly not black and white. "my head up in the clouds and my two feet on the ground". Musically it's a feast of restraint and excesses - too good to pass up.
'Over and Over' Now what! Is this some kind of a throwback cajun hybrid? The crass but pinpoint accurate lyric coupled with Warren's rasping slide guitar and honky tonk piano tell the story. Now the album's cooking. She sings "you know the law of the jungle is the way of the world" and we know it's true.
Obvious blues roots follow into 'Suspicion' complete with strings to cloak the underlying dark sentiments expressed here. Good playing all around. The album is showing some depth.
Next is 'Rene's Son' a cool groove and a bleak ballad told in all honesty.
Next, 'Breakdown in Hollywood' is solid to the core. Very much a California style band sound. Hot, sandy, and suntanned is this freakout laid bare on the Sunset Strip. Gotta blast this one on a road trip.
A change of pace, and a curious sexy narrative unfolds in 'Holly Go'. Our Babe in the Woods is doing what all adventurous girls do, but has she gone too far? Her beau's a bit of a psycho it seems. She sings "When you smashed your glass against your head it made me want to cry." Run baby run! The music teases and tosses with with it's syncopated snappiness and surprises with spaghetti western guitar choruses.

Crash, and back to a wall of signature guitars. A steady build and a passionate anthem unfolds. '(It's My) Life and Times.' Told from the perspective of experience she is driven by belief in her journey's end and we can believe every word. Very original track. A stand out right down to the unusual solo.
And then more California, or is it some other time and space? 'Into the Light' the only track by penned by David asks the question "what world are you from?" Sparse and airy the music and lyric intertwine in dreamy overlapping waves. She sings "into the light forever". Our girl gets a welcome time out.

But not for long. In 'Right Here and Now' she comes back and makes a promise to the world. "There's gonna be changes made and how". Self assured, full of confidence and bombast, plowing ahead, she rides the music with its frantic infectious choruses and underlines a positive commitment to a life worth living.

It's impossible to stick a genre label on this album. It deserves many listens. Not super glitzy production but a completeness and a sense of a throwback to the concept albums of the modern past. For my money it's a keeper.

Recordings like "My Stupid Life" and "Breakdown in Hollywood" lead the whole album as a throwback to another time where lyrics were about the emotion of living out the human experience and musicianship speaks for itself. This album is so good in so many different ways, with strong lyrics and solid guitar licks, a driving percussion to set the backbone for all the recordings, and really tuneful vocals which clearly tell a continuing story, there is nothing not to like with this album. It's a must to pick it up for anyone who truly appreciates true musicianship and lyrics."
